Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

It’s one of the first questions we get from EV owners: ‘Can my switchboard handle an EV charger?’ The honest answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no. The goal isn’t to upsell upgrades — it’s to make sure your charger is installed safely, with correct protection, and without nuisance tripping.

What we check first

  • Spare capacity on the main supply (and typical household loads)
  • Physical space in the board for the required protection
  • Existing protection (RCD/RCBO type and condition)
  • Cable run distance and routing to the charger location

Common reasons an upgrade is needed

  • The board is physically full (no safe way to add protection)
  • Older boards with mixed/unknown protection and poor labeling
  • Existing issues (overheating, loose connections, water ingress, recurring faults)
  • You’re stacking new loads (EV charger + heat pump hot water + air con, etc.)

Good news: most homes don’t need a ‘massive’ upgrade

Often it’s a targeted upgrade: tidy up protection, add the right circuit, and ensure compliance. The best way to avoid surprises is to send us photos of your switchboard and meter box.
